Tin Fulton Walker & Owen’s Charlotte office is in need of a full-time paralegal to support its family law practice group.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for helping others, is polished and professional despite the firm’s laid-back atmosphere, and most importantly, is conscientious, detail-oriented, organized, and reliable. Family law paralegal job description: 

  • Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Rare overtime, paid at time and a half.
  • Supporting 2 family law attorneys (100% family law, no other practice areas).
  • Responsibilities include: 
    • File organization and management (we are almost exclusively paperless, so client files are maintained digitally).
    • Calendar management (including litigation deadlines).
      • Familiarity with the Mecklenburg County Domestic Local Rules, and family court rules for the various other counties in which we have cases, is not a prerequisite but will be essential to learn.
    • Intake and scheduling for prospective clients of the family law practice.
    • Sit in on and take notes during new client consultations.
    • Regularly communicating (by phone and email) with clients, opposing parties (if unrepresented), opposing counsel, court clerks, etc. 
    • Drafting and document preparation (for example, correspondence and enclosure/fax memos, subpoenas, notices of hearing, financial and equitable distribution affidavits, motions and orders for extension of time, discovery responses, discovery/document inventories, etc.).
    • Regularly (estimated 2 – 3 times per week) traveling to Mecklenburg County courthouse (which is 1.4 miles from office) to take filings, and occasionally traveling to other various counties. Also will occasionally travel to Register of Deeds, various other local law offices, etc. You will need to have your own transportation for this.
    • Trial/hearing preparation (including preparing exhibits (which may be physical or digital depending on whether the proceeding is in person or virtual)), taking detailed notes during prep meetings with clients, interviewing potential witnesses, etc. You will accompany attorneys to court for all proceedings other than administrative functions.
    • Attend calendar call on behalf of the attorneys.
    • Have your work email on your phone so that should any emergency emails be received after-hours, you can alert the attorney on the case.
    • All of our work is hourly (billed by the tenth of the hour), so you would be responsible for entering your billable time into our system (we currently use Timeslips).
    • Review published court calendars as they become available (by email subscription) to determine if either attorney has any cases appearing on the calendar.
    • Ideally, is already a licensed notary, or can become a notary in short order.
  • Applicants should possess excellent communication and typing skills, proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Acrobat X Standard. Familiarity with North Carolina Child Support Guidelines software and court transcription software are preferred, as is previous law office employment experience.  
  • Perks & benefits:
    • Salary: $45,000 - $80,000 depending on experience.
    • After ~ 6 months of employment (estimated timeframe based on being fully trained and comfortable in the position), you will have the ability to work from home 2 days per week (possibly more) if schedules permit.
    • Excellent medical insurance coverage (like seriously great coverage that you never find anymore) provided by the firm at no cost to you (annual value = ~ $12,000; note that dental and vision insurance are not included and are not available through the firm), there is a 30-day wait after date of hire, then enrollment would be on the 1st day of the following month.
    • Long and short-term disability coverage provided at no cost to you (which provides some coverage for childbirth), effective 60 days after hire.
    • Partially-paid maternity/paternity available after 18 months of employment (up to 12 weeks off, paid at 60% of your salary for the weeks not covered by short-term disability coverage).
    • $50,000 life insurance policy provided at no cost to you, effective 60 days after hire.
    • 401k match of 4% with employee contribution of at least 5% of salary, effective 180 days after hire.
    • Reimbursements for any mileage expenses.
    • 15 days of PTO/year in addition to various holidays when office is closed, which include: 
      • New Year’s Day
      • MLK Day
      • Good Friday
      • Memorial Day
      • Emancipation Day
      • July 4th
      • Labor Day
      • Thanksgiving and the day after
      • Christmas (2 days which vary depending on when the holiday falls).
    • If you hold a paralegal license (not required for the position), then your annual recertification fee and required CPE courses will be paid for.
    • Notary certification/recertification are paid for.
