Courtney Hamer Smith joined Tin Fulton Walker & Owen in 2017. Courtney has practiced family law exclusively her entire career (since 2007) and is certified as a specialist in family law by the North Carolina State Bar. Courtney is passionate about family law and finds it very rewarding to help her clients through what is no doubt one of the most difficult times in life.
Courtney’s practice involves litigation, negotiation, and Collaborative Divorce. Courtney strives to find a fair resolution without litigation because she believes litigation is destructive to families. However, she recognizes that there are circumstances which may make it impossible for two individuals to be able to reach a mutual agreement and, as a result, litigation is sometimes necessary. In circumstances where litigation is necessary, Courtney is effective because she has litigated family law cases for many years and is extremely thorough. Courtney makes it a point to give her clients realistic expectations, rather than telling them what she thinks they want to hear.
Courtney’s practice involves all aspects of family law including separation and divorce, custody, child support, post-separation support, alimony, equitable distribution, legitimation and paternity, annulment, termination of parental rights, preparation of separation agreements, premarital agreements, and post-nuptial agreements. She also has experience handling a variety of non-traditional custody cases including same-sex parents, step-parents, and grandparents seeking custody.
Courtney Hamer Smith is involved as an executive board member of Charlotte Collaborative Divorce Professionals and is an active Collaborative Divorce practitioner. She also performs pro bono service through the Council for Children’s Rights Child Advocacy Program. Outside of work, Courtney enjoys backpacking, taking her very large dog on walks, and spending time with her two young children and husband.
